Check this calendar as often as you like for new developments. Nevertheless, to avoid disappointment, we recommend that you also get on the notification e-lists (etc.) of the sponsoring groups themselves. You also can check their Web publications and telephone them. Especially before you travel far to attend an event, we recommend that you first confirm each separate event with the presenters. Sometimes, though, this calendar is more accurate than the Web pages of the sponsoring groups. We at NFIRC check for new developments, usually daily. Usually within minutes of getting them, we include them here. We are overall the most up-to-date, most accurate, most comprehensive, and most dependable publisher of nude events in BC. (Sorry for bragging!) 5.1.5. Nude-friendly & related terms "Nude-friendly" means that something is both friendly to nudists (naturists) and pleased to include them. That term was coined by your editor around 1990. It is also spelled "nwd-friendly" to elude spam filtres. It is a broad term that includes events and sites which are nude-required, nude-optional, and/or "bare as you dare"! It does not usually include people nude for sexual purposes. On the other hand, the term "clothing-optional" is a term preferred by governments which are trying to appease nudists, yet not upset the prudes so much. Unfortunately, "clothing-optional" is a term which psychologically erodes the nudist movement. It insinuates that to say the word "nude" is too embarrassing. The term "clothing-optional" also makes clothing compulsions sound less compulsive. (Who could complain about options? They sound so innocuous!) A better, synonymous term which makes the concept of nudity sound better is "nude-optional". In fact, however, clothing harms the addicts and everyone else exposed to it. Nudity harms no one (barring cold or other physical and legal risks, etc.). "Bare as you dare" (BAYD) means that nudity is welcomed, but the hosts or organisers of the events can not guarantee that you are safe from arrest and charges by the bullying public authorities. BAYD usually refers to events in public areas where public nudity is uncommon and more-or-less illegal, but we think that we can get away with it there, and usually do. See also Sections 5.3.a. and 5.4.5 below, and topfree (bare chest) in Section 11, below. Similarly, "topfree-friendly" includes topfree-required, topfree-optional, and/or topfree-as-you-dare (all coined by your editor 2010 April 8). Also, "top-slave" means either some authority, organisation, or person opposed to topfreedom or a place or situation lacking topfreedom (this meaning coined by your editor 2011 August 20). It also means a person unable or unwilling or afraid to practice topfreedom (meaning added 2012 August 8). (This article revised 2014 May 27.) 5.2. E-mailing Once a month, on request and without charge, we e-mail a link to this calendar to everyone interested. It's a helpful reminder. Sometimes the link in the e-announcement doesn't work (as sometimes with Hotmail, we heard once; Yahoo has other problems). If clicking on the e-mailed link fails, please "paste" (or type) our Web address into your on-screen address box: www.korky.ca or http://nfirc.weebly.com . To submit, inform, advise, enquire, comment, subscribe, refer, cancel an e-subscription, etc., please e-write to korkyday [insert a with a circle round it] yahoo [dot] com . (More in Sect. 20.) Please e-forward our link to your friends and groups. If they don't object, please send us their e-addresses and we'll send them a sample subscription. To elude e-mail spam filtres, spell "nude" as "nwd", etc. in the Subject box & in the body of your message. We don't use words like "nude" or "nwd" in the subject line in order that you are not risking negative response if others see it. 5.3. Before you attend: important! Please honour all the following traditions and advice in (a.) and (b.) (below), including in public, such as at a nude beach or a nude bike ride. 5.3.a. BEHAVIOUR The local-government lifeguards say that our indoor pool event attenders are some of the best behaved whom they guard. We intend to keep up our reputation. Generally unwelcome at these pool events, other events, and nude sites are photography not approved in advance, uninvited staring, uninvited following, uninvited hovering, uninvited touching, premature advances, prying or excessive questions, offencive talk, overly sexual talk, men's erections (see explanation 5 paragraphs below), overt sex, etc. To get an exception made for you, please ask the organisers in advance. Photography. If allowed at all, cameras, photography, and sound recording must be pre-authorised by the club or presenters, by all the subjects, and by the parents of minors. Please always ask politely first. That includes in public, too, such as at nude beaches, bike rides, and topfree events. Just because someone appears nude or topfree in public does not give you the right to photograph them, nor give you permission. Many people argue opposite, but they are wrong. Besides, if photographers were not restricted, many fewer people would go nude. You wouldn't want that, would you? Don't be selfish. Don't hurt the nudist movement. Don't frighten others. Be careful making comments. This might sound uptight, but nevertheless, please avoid mentioning body appearance or attractiveness, even positive comments, including about persons not present or about people in general. Show that you can think of other things. Even if your comment is absolutely non-discriminatory and non-erotic, when others hear you, they might feel self-conscious, anyway. In other words, until you hear otherwise from them, assume that a person has just barely enough nerve to go nude. Assume that any little comment from you about anyone's appearance might scare them back to shame, fear, and textilism. You might think that someone with a tattoo is inviting comment, but consider that they might regret getting a tattoo or might be very tired of comments. Adult and teen male erections are rare in mixed-sex nudism, contrary to some rumours, myths, fantasies, and expectations. Even if not a crime, and rightly or wrongly, such erections might frighten, annoy, or disgust some attenders. Therefore, we discourage such erections, even though some people are not offended. If such a thing occurs, most clubs will advise the male how to diminish them easily, such as by jumping into the water or by lying front down. Although nudism, sex, and erections are inherently good, we in the main nudist movement keep them separate so that we can attract the most people to nudism. Please report all violators to group leaders. That is not because we like to be punitive or authoritarian, but that it helps us to maintain an environment which is inviting and comfortable for all. When sitting on a bench, chair, chesterfield, log, etc., please sit on a towel, serviette, shirt, or similar barrier--for hygiene. Such a barrier is not necessary on a tile or concrete pool deck or on the bare ground. Do not urinate into any water (other than a toilet) or near the edge, nor add anything to the water which you would not put onto your skin. It is hypocritical to let a child see a woman's breast and then to offer the child a sucking bottle or dummy. (The latter also is called, misleadingly, a "pacifier" or "soother".) Such an offer would be cruel even if the child has never seen a breast. Instead, always let the child have a real breast. The artificial substitutes are always unhealthy and unnecessary. (See LLL in Section 11-end below.) Smoking, even outdoors, harms and offends many. Where smoking is allowed, we recommend that you refrain anyway, or at least move away from others while you smoke. If there is any wind, moving down-wind of others is more important than how far away you are. If the air is still, please move even farther from others. If being nude socially doesn't make you happy enough, without you wanting to drink or toke (etc.) also, then maybe you have treatable emotional and social problems. However, prescription psycho-active drugs are some of the worst drugs, though they have an official seal of approval! They are not good or humane treatment. Any resort, club, group, etc., may refuse you admission, membership, association, etc., without explanation. Be very nice or risk being banned by all the groups. They communicate with each other about problem people. We publish in the group descriptions, their restrictions (if any and when known). Nudism is good for all ages, but for a club's legal protection, they generally require a parent or legal guardian to accompany a minor. One club in BC is for adults only. A few groups have quotas to keep a good balance of men and women. An imbalance could lead to lower attendance and dissatisfaction. If you notice an annoying male-female imbalance, please help recruit attenders to fix it. Rest assured that these groups will not bar anyone because of alleged attractiveness or lack thereof, or because of size, race, nationality, sexual preference, sexual identity, religion, social class, occupation, etc. The rare restrictions on disabled people are only because of physical barriers. Before entering a pool, hot tub, sauna, etc., please rinse your whole body, including your head. It's true that many lifeguards nowadays are slack on enforcing that common courtesy and health practice, but that doesn't mean that you should be inconsiderate. (Revised 2014 3 31.) 5.3.b. PERSONAL NAMES & ANONYMITY. Traditionally, in the nudist movement, attenders and members refer to each other by first name only, except for membership records. That is to keep membership more private--for the protection of participants. While it might be declining now, discrimination against nudists still continues in society at large. The trend could get worse or better, we don't know. Therefore, with private nudist groups, and even at public nude beaches and nude bike rides, etc., please follow that privacy tradition, except concerning someone who tells you that they don't mind otherwise. If you want more privacy than usual about your surname, please ask the organisers of an event. When communicating with non-attenders, please reveal even less: not even first names, without permission. Please do not reveal to non-attenders who attends or who does not attend; who is a nudist or not; etc. You can answer such questions something like this: "The nudist movement honours privacy. That's for our protection against discrimination. If you want to know people's personal information, ask them yourself." 5.3.c. CONFIRM BEFORE ATTENDING Because of possible errors, unavoidable cancellations, etc., please confirm an event before attending, especially if you would be travelling far. This publication is as accurate as possible, but we must rely on club officials who are not always so careful. Admittance and eligibility vary. Reservations and permission occasionally are required. An event might sell out. Memberships are sold at most events, though they might take several days to process your application. Joining by Internet or mail, when available, is appreciated. 5.3.d. FINDING EVENT DETAILS For each event in the calendar listings, see also further details and the group's general description on page 2 of Nude events, Sections 6-20. The index of the groups' initials is in the blue section (near bottom of this page). 5.3.e. WE COUNT ON YOU TO BRING OTHERS! We encourage you to bring friends, relatives, acquaintances, a date, etc. to nude-friendly events and sites. You will enjoy it more. You will share an uplifting experience—and you will help our movement! Do not think that you should remain clothed with people you bring to a nude event in order to ease them into nudity gradually. That simply will make you look ashamed, uncertain, hypocritical, and overly cautious. It will also make the nude people feel uncomfortable because you seem to be betraying them and your principles. For comparison, when accompanying an alcoholic friend to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting for their first time, would you carry a beer in your hand in order to make your friend feel more "comfortable"? Please bring the kinds of people you like into our movement. Don't gripe or whine--and expect others to recruit them for you, or expect them to appear by magic! (However, you could contribute money to pay for recruiting! As far as we know, no groups in BC have paid recruiters now.) So we are counting on you to help recruit new people. If you don't help recruit, event costs might have to rise. Recruiting and publicity on the Internet are now easier than ever. Do your part if you are on the Internet! Also, you could phone your friends. As it is now, in most groups, I estimate about 1 to 4 volunteers recruit and attract about 75 to 95% of the new people. About 90% of attenders never bring anyone new. They don't see it as their job. However, these nude events are generally put on by volunteers, not professional crowd-gatherers. If you want other people to attend, you'll have to help. Use e-media, if you like. [Revised 2014 June 16.] 5.4. Everyone can participate! Welcome to these events, you practicing or potential nudists, naturists (not to be confused with naturalists), nudes, bares, nakeds, nakedists, skinny-dippers, free beachers, nude sunbathers, nude sun-tanners, nude sun-worshipers, nude-optionists, clothing-optionists, clothes-free people, clothesfreers, clothes-freeists, nudies, jaybirds, starkers, streakers, mooners, nude protesters, naked savages, half-naked savages, sweat-lodgers, naked pagans, naked animists, naked witches, naked wiccans, gymnosophists, nude cyclists, nude artists, Burning Man nudes, nude art models, nude body painters, nude artists, nude art appreciators, cottontails (once misstated as "bucktails"), home nudists, solo outdoor nudists, recovering textiles, recovering clothists, nude curiousers, sky-clads, nude Digambara Jains, other nude Jains, nude Freedomite Doukhobors, other nude Doukhobors, Leapists, agnostic nudists, inoffencive flashers, nude-peacers, topfrees, bra-burners, bra-recyclers, bold breastfeeders, shy breastfeeders, and even all of you sympathetic people who avoid or dislike such "labels", "boxes", and "pigeon-holes"! Remain naked, forgo dressing, get naked, be bare, eschew clothes, disrobe, undress, undrape, uncover, doff your clothes, strip, streak, go topfree, be shirtless, go bare-chested, bare your chest, and breastfeed. Never condone or actively sexually mutilate (circumcision, etc.) anyone except adults who have given their free, informed permission! Never use corporate poison substitutes for breastfeeding: baby bottles or dummies (pacifiers). Support nude rights by being nude—and by your other actions, attendance, speech, writing, votes, purchases, and donations. Defend nudes against our detractors. Your rights—use them or lose them! Most nude-friendly events are for all sexes and ages, conditionally. (See Section 5.4.3 below.) Most event hosts and some site hosts admit you without prior arrangement. If you lack money, transportation, supplies, etc., ask the organisers (or ask us at NFIR) for options or assistance. Events and sites which require nudity sometimes grant exceptions to that standard, but don't count on it, especially not without prior permission. See below in Section 17, "Exceptions in nudism". Genuine nudists accept, welcome, and appreciate everyone, regardless of ability, health, fitness, genetics, attractiveness, etc. Social nudity (nudism) should not be a "beauty contest", formally or informally, although such contests were common decades ago at less-enlightened nudist clubs. Our tolerance and acceptance does not mean that we want you to become less fit or less healthy, but that nevertheless we welcome you into our movement, whatever your condition. About refused admission, see Section 5.3.a, Behaviour, above. 5.4.3. Sex-segregated groups & topfree groups With references to sections below (on the next e-page). Male-only groups: Deer Leep Retreat (Section 8). P-CAN (Section 9). Skyclad Yoga (men-only classes in Vancouver; some men-only and sometimes some mixed classes in Victoria; Section 9). Gay Naturists International (Section 14). Club Desnudo (Section 14). Female-only groups: Dykes on Bikes (Section 11). Take Back the Night (inactive, Section 11). La Leche League (in Section 11, end). Nude-friendly female federation (Section 9.1). Females (sometimes with males) working for female topfreedom (topfree equal rights): 3BT (Section 10). TERA (Section 11). Ts (Section 11). NIFTY (Section 6.5). 5.4.5. Are you proud of tolerating nudes while hiding in your swim-suit or shorts? Perhaps you think you are quite enlightened to be so tolerant like that headline above. However, please consider the possibility that you are being anti-social by wearing clothes where others are trying to establish a liberated nude zone. Public nude beaches are an example. Consider Wreck Beach in Vancouver, BC; in Coast Salish territory. There, the invader government is Metro Vancouver, BC (formerly the GVRD) in Coast Salish territory, part of the Musqueam community. Metro Vancouver refuses to agree that Wreck Beach is a "nude beach" because it is not to their political advantage, even though it would be better for everyone if they did. Instead, they call it "clothing-optional". That is a term preferred by governments which are trying to appease nudists, yet not upset the prudes so much. Unfortunately, "clothing-optional" is a term which psychologically erodes the nudist movement. It insinuates that to say the word "nude" is too embarrassing. The term "clothing-optional" also makes clothing compulsions sound less compulsive. (Who could complain about options? They sound so innocuous!) A better, synonymous term which makes the concept of nudity sound better is "nude-optional", but that's still not as good as "nude". At such a beach it is not good enough for you merely to tolerate nudes around you while you wear a swimsuit. Even though the beach was declared "clothing-optional" by the invader government, it really should be called a nude beach, one of the few places where nudists are welcomed and can go nude safely and comfortably, relatively. Please don't spoil it by unnecessarily wearing clothes there. That's like eating at a potluck dinner--but bringing no food. Or wearing plain clothes to a costume ball. Do you see how you would spoil it for others? That's really inconsiderate and selfish! Wearing clothes unnecessarily is the shame, not being nude. You'll get no respect that way, especially you men! You make others naturally suspect that you are a gawker, the same as going to a potluck dinner empty-handed makes others suspect you are a moocher. Just what do you want others to conclude about you when they see you always covering up, especially you men? You seem to have some emotional or social problem! Why not get help for it? Try asking us. If you really believe that the people at a nude beach would be too unpleasant to you if you were nude, then why do you want to be with such people as us, anyway? To sneer at us? If you can't build up your courage to go nude, (or at least topfree if you are a woman), please just go to one of the many, many textile beaches. Leave our few nude havens for those of us who are not so uptight as you. Of course, if you are a newcomer to nudism and you go to a nude beach, we'll forgive you if you are a little slow to try it. Many of us were, too. However, too many oblivious, inconsiderate people attend time after time, enjoy the "good vibes" we create with our nudity, but then partially spoil the mood with their selfish clothed presence. It should not take you men more than 3 visits to overcome your pathetic little phobias. Women in our sexist society have more justification for feeling vulnerable, though hundreds of thousands of women have found the courage to go nude at Wreck Beach. To that idea, many of you ask, "But what about freedom? Can't you nudists tolerate textiles like I tolerate you nudists?" Sounds like you don't understand human nature. Humans are social animals. If I am among many people who are wearing clothes, those people automatically (based in our genetics) put a natural, social peer-pressure on me to get dressed, too. If nudes are not in the great majority of a crowd, they usually feel vulnerable and isolated. That's natural because, biologically, humans are not a solitary or selfish species. We are a social species. Human see; human do! We like to do things together, as a group. Even when wearing clothes, we like them to be similarly formal or casual, etc. Wearing a team uniform, for instance, builds team spirit. Like that, the nudist "uniform" of nudity builds solidarity. Why spoil it? Of course, some people are brave or bold or oblivious enough to undress with no regard to how many others are dressed around them. Or to dress very differently from others around them. Those people are in the minority, though. Most of us, even hard-core nudists and hard-core anti-nudists, even I, feel some social pressure in the other direction in "hostile" territory. The peer-pressure situation is good indoors at the NIFTY nude-optional swim-spas (see the calendar above [except summer] and Section 6, near the end of that section). Few people wear swimsuits at them: usually 0 to 4%. Therefore, peer pressure at NIFTY swims favours nudity, not swimsuits. The occasional person there in a swimsuit usually will either (a) not care, (b) learn to screw up their courage to go nude after attending once or twice, or (c) not return. However, no one is pressured to dress, other than by silent, subtle, unavoidable peer pressure. For a potential nudist, then, attending a NIFTY swim-spa can be empowering, joyful, and therapeutic. The smaller, closer-knit crowd at the pool (compared to Wreck Beach) also makes it easier for some newcomers to feel comfortable nude. So, if you're not brave enough to go nude at a public beach, please try a NIFTY swim instead, or other private nude-optional events. (2009~ essay, revised 2014 June 16.) 5.4.6. Cowardly, sexist men keep their pants on! Hey, man! Yes, you with your pants on at the nude beach! This is for you and all the similar men diluting our nude beach! Do you know that there is a difference between men and women at a nude beach? I mean more than you can see! More than body shape. In the essay above ("Are you proud . . .?") I describe how dressed people spoil others' attempts at liberation. Now I'll explain more about how that works differently for men than for women in a sexist, patriarchal society, such as almost all of Western Culture, of Islamic culture, and of most other cultures in the world today. In a patriarchy, compared to an egalitarian society or a matriarchy, the main difference in the role of women is that they are expected to be powerless, submissive sex toys, baby-makers, house-maids, victims, slaves, and/or scapegoats for men, much more than the other way around. The average man has more worldly power--including politics, wealth, weapons, connections, and body strength than the average woman. So he has more power to choose desirable spouses or sex partners. Many of them also choose a woman mate in order to show off to other men what a prestigious woman (or harem) they have. Women, on the other hand, are confronted with the reality of being coerced, much more than men are, into using their bodies' attraction to 'get by' in the world and to be happy. So you dudes come to a nude beach like Wreck Beach and what do you see? Many nudists and many prudists and rudists (I just made those up!). Everyone likes to see nude people. That's natural. No harm there. By the way, I'm analysing here the situation for heterosexuals, but similar dynamics apply to gays, lesbians, etc. Even if you are poor and not consciously feeling sexist, you men still have a socially-privileged sex role which gives you the advantage over women generally. Men who, consciously or not, are exercising their sexist, superior role, might see no obligation or need to expose their own bodies. If they don't feel like it, why should they? Their job is to judge the beauty of the women, right? They don't see their role as being judged themselves! After all, if those men were nude, they might be mistaken for men who believe in equality and who respect women! Or who are brave enough to make themselves as vulnerable as nudist women are. In non-nudist places, such as while watching a commercial strip show, are men nude? No, because they are the judges, not the judged! Women wouldn't be performing there, but for the pay, and most men wouldn't like to pay if they, too, had to be nude. Unfortunately, some men think they can come to a nude beach and treat it like a free strip show just for them. No, the world does not revolve around just you, buddy! Women count, too. For a man to exercise his power over women is cowardly and bullying. The more cowardly and sexist they are, the more likely they are to wear pants. Bullies are, underneath, very insecure. Unfortunately, they seldom think that through, so they don't understand all this. Now when I tell that to men, they usually act all innocent and full of excuses: "Oh, no! You don't know me! I'm not like that! I'm just an innocent bloke who's not rich or powerful or bullying. I don't gawk or judge. I'm just a nice guy sitting here in my shorts minding my own business--where there just happen to be nude and topfree women. Why do I have to drop my drawers just because some old hippie man like you tells me that I should? You could be gay!" All right, it's true: you don't HAVE to strip. However, you don't fool me or the women or many other people. Anyway, I have no power over you because I'm just a relatively-weak man, too. I'm appealing to your logic. The patriarchy hurts us men, too. If you could see that, you, too, would want to replace the patriarchy, as we are trying to do. If you don't feel the 'need' to go nude, do you feel the 'need' to stay dressed? Why? I'm suggesting you look deeply into your psyche. What you're doing is not helping anybody. It's hurting. You're part of the problem, not part of the solution. Look at the results. You sit there clothed and what does a woman think? Do you suppose she's thinking, "Oh, goodie! There's a man with his pants on. He doesn't look too much like a woman-beater. His timidity and insecurity are real turn-offs, but maybe he's a rich guy who I can marry--or get money from for sex! I think I'll prance around nude in front of him and catch his eye!"? Do you think or hope that's what she's thinking? Does that sound good to you? Maybe if a woman is feeling desperate, she might think that. Is that how you want women to relate to you? Out of desperation? If so, keep your pants on--at some other beach, please, not one with nudity. Most women at a nude beach, though, think more like this when they notice you: "Damn! There's another perv with his trousers on, ashamed of his prick, but enjoying looking at my bod. How can I feel fully free and safe and joyous with all of them lurking around, gawking at us women, especially the nude women--or trying to sneak a peek? Maybe I should just quit coming to this beach." So you see, you men hiding behind your pants are deterring many women from coming to the beach or going nude. That includes all kinds of women, even the more liberated ones, unfortunately, the ones more likely to go nude. If all the men at the beach were nude, many more women would be encouraged to attend and go nude, too, feeling that you men have more respect and consideration for them as equals. So, fella--take responsibility for your actions! Screw up your courage. Try showing us that you're a man: nude and natural. Nudity symbolises being unarmed and less threatening and vulnerable to each other as equals, as in any good relationship. Or would you rather appear more threatening? What are you so afraid of? You will enjoy it much more than you think! It's much easier than you probably think. Sure, there are sometimes good reasons to cover up, such as a sunburn, but they don't apply to many men all the time. Find shade. Your first time at a nude beach? All right, maybe you need a few minutes to get used to the idea. Don't want to fall on your delicate bare bum while skim-boarding? All right, but what's stopping you from disrobing after your athletics? (Aren't you like someone wearing your bicycle helmet to bed?) Many guys tell me they don't want to strip unless their accompanying friends do, too. Pathetic excuse. If you want to quit smoking, do you wait for your friends to do so along with you? All right, make it a game! Do it together. Who's brave enough to go first? If none of you, then ask some nudists for advice and encouragement. Don't say, "Oh, I wouldn't mind going nude, honest! I will--if I ever feel like it!" Nobody buys that pitiful line. You can see how much fun it is to go nude. You can imagine how good it feels. You want to try, but you're scared. Admit it. So just try it for 5 minutes! Nudity is not like a drug (such as alcohol) which can give you horrible side effects, like death. What bad could happen to a man from nudity? If you are too timid for that, why don't you just go home and stew in your own pathetic weakness, and be lonely? You can get good and tired of that. Then come back when you have some balls—visible! — by Korky Day, 2011 August 5 to 2014 June 16 (but Weebly lost some of my revisions). 5.5. Nude-friendly and affiliated events Events for pro-nude activists to attend clothed are shown in this fuchsia colour and with this asterisk: *. Such clothed events support nude sites or groups or the movement, but, for one reason or another, those particular events are not nude or topfree. Events in black or red type are usually nude optional or nude only, sometimes topfree, instead, as noted. Occasionally, they are instead bare-as-you-dare, as noted. Throughout your daily lives, if and when you do dress, please consider wearing a garment or badge promoting nudity, topfree, breastfeeding, body pride, unmutilated genitals, health, peace, love, etc. You can buy such items from some of these groups. Index of activities (in brown) All scheduled qualifying activities (of which we know) are in the calendar above (Sections 3 & 4). This index (below) does not list the dates. Rather, this index connects the activity to the groups (and places) which offer it, have offered it, will offer it, or might offer it. That way, you can contact them even if they do not have it scheduled now. If you don't see it on our calendar, it would help if you ask the groups to offer the activity. With your encouragement, the groups are likely to offer the activities you like sooner. Or you can organize them yourself. (Ask us for advice how.) INDOOR SWIM-SPA DETAILS — VANCOUVER AREA (For swim-spas in British Columbia OUTSIDE the Lower Mainland, see Section 7 below. For temperature and price comparison charts, see below.) There are 3 groups which offer "swims" at (usually) 3 indoor pools (with spas) in the Lower Mainland, most months from September to June. SD (#2 below) offers them usually monthly year-round. The 3 groups and their own Web pages for their swim-spas are: Most 1st Sat's. Skinnydipper Recreation Club (SD) http://club.skinnydipper.ca/swims/wave_pool_swim.php . Most 2nd Sat's. Naked Iconoclasts Fighting The Yoke (NIFTY), www.niftynude.org/index2.htm . Most 3rd Sat's. Wreck Beach Swim Club (WBSC). See "Swims" in their top left menu at www.wreckbeach.org . Most last Sat's. Naked Iconoclasts Fighting The Yoke (NIFTY), www.niftynude.org/index2.htm . Many more details are below, including, in some cases, many details that are not in their own Web publications. We have more details about the swims here in NFIR Calendar than anywhere else. Here they are usually updated quicker and more accurately! Another source is www.nudeswims.bc.ca . Section 6.1. Conditions for all 3 swim-spa series (these are in the Vancouver area; for elsewhere--see Section 7 below) Generally the same behaviour rules apply for nude-friendly swims as at public (textile) sessions at pools, or stricter. See Section 5.3.1, previous page, before you attend. Each of the 3 groups usually rents a different public indoor pool for several Saturday nights a year, to which it invites you. The prices, rules, facilities, and activities are similar at all 3. Many people go to all 3. NIFTY's is nude optional (it is mostly nudes). The other 2 are, instead, for nudes only. Some groups will switch pools, such as when their usual pool is unavailable, or for a 5-Saturday month. See how else they differ in Sections 6.2 to 6.5 below. Schedules: Most of the swims are September (after Labour Day Monday) through June, with minor variations around holidays, pool cleaning closures, etc. See Sections 3 and 5.1, above. Only the SD swims in Surrey are year-round, except when Newton Wave Pool is unavailable. Arrive early to get into the pool on time after queuing. Facilities: All these events are indoors. Each venue has a pool and a hot tub with jets. Each has a sauna and/or steam bath. All have diving board(s) except Newton Wave Pool (SD), which has huge slides instead. Each is wheelchair accessible. Usually they play water volleyball, for which it helps if you are 122 cm tall or taller (except SD at Newton Wave Pool, where it is played on a dry floor). All these pool events are guarded by the regular uniformed city lifeguards. Joining: Skinnydipper RC and NIFTY require membership for adults. With Wreck Beach SC, membership is optional. At all of them, you may join at the door. Other than a membership fee, joining does not oblige you more than a non-member. Everyone must follow the regular pool rules, plus the club rules, especially safe and respectful behaviour. Your information is not given out without your permission. Tickets and passes: These swims are private events at rented public facilities. To attend these private events you may not use tickets, discounts, cards, passes, etc. which are for public sessions. However, some documents will get you a discount at NIFTY swims: see Section 6.5, last sub-section, below. Minors: At all these swims (and most other nude-friendly events) parents and legal guardians are welcome to bring their minor offspring at no extra charge and without enroling them. No other minors may attend (for the legal protection of all). A breastfeeding professional (IBCLC) often attends these events. Lockers: Clothes lockers at some pools can be secured with a lock you bring. Others lock only with their own mechanism. Some cost 25¢ or 50¢. Some accept a token (sold at the desk; no refund). Some return your coins after use. Items are left at your own risk. Which places have which kinds of lockers, when known, is noted below. Some pools have small "wallet lockers"—to hold wallet, keys, eyeglasses, jewelry, etc. At some pools, 25¢. Restaurants: Right after or right before most swims, some of the attenders meet clothed at a restaurant to socialise, and (if you choose) to buy and eat food. No cover charge. Check the events in Section 3, above, in the club info, below, or ask the organisers. (They are in this fuchsia colour with an asterisk * to show that they are clothed events.) Cycling to the events: For bicycle routes, see as described for each swim, below, and see: www.translink.ca/en/Cycling/Cycling-Routes.aspx Public motor transport to the pools, etc.: www.translink.bc.ca . More: For more information about a nude-friendly event, please don't contact the pool staff. Instead, contact the hosting groups (below) or the NFIRC editor (end, below). They are an auxiliary of Van Tan Nudist Club (VT) Van Tan Nudist Club maintains their rustic, private resort on a mountain-side in the District of North Vancouver, BC. It is the oldest nudist club in Canada: since 1939. Co-operatively owned. Affiliated with the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) and with the Federation of Canadian Naturists (FCN) (both in Section 14, below). On their 3-hectare grounds are a wood-burning outdoor hot tub (since 2011) and an old wood-burning sauna in a shed. You can make them hotter by adding wood. Outdoors are a shower, camping, tenting, camper & RV parking, picnicking, barbecue, reservoir, grass volleyball, grass badminton, shuffleboard, horseshoes, and distant view. (No electricity, cabins, RV hook-ups, or clubhouse.) Indoor composting toilets (new ~2011). Their grounds are at ~424 m elevation, ~2 km uphill from a city bus route, a 30- to 45-minute walk, mostly on a gravel road. Get permission before attending almost all events, except an "open house". Many events are only for members or with invited guests. ---June to August. About 2 Van Tan open houses per year; at the club grounds. Notifying the club and/or joining ahead of time allows the club to arrange enough lifeguards ahead of time and allows you to spend less time checking in at the front desk. http://club.skinnydipper.ca/swims/wave_pool_swim.php . Skinnydipper won a suit (pardon the expression), with court costs, against the City of Surrey, BC, on 2007 November 8. So the Skinnydippers have resumed swims at Newton Wave Pool. Unfortunately, the city (the losing side in the legal case) does not have to pay for Skinnydipper's lawyers. So please donate to "Save the Wave": http://stw.skinnydipper.ca . Details are there, too. Newton Wave Pool has big artificial waves: "the biggest waves in the West". Those waves measure, at their tallest, about 1 metre from trough to crest. The wave pool is 37.5 m long and 12 m wide, but not rectangular. The wave pool facility was rebuilt in 2008. The 2 giant water slides are now steeper & faster: the newly pitch-dark Black Mamba (63 m long) & the super-slick Whirlwind (67 m long). To slide on either, you must be 7 years old or older, 122 cm tall or taller, no more massive than 135 kg, and not physically fragile or vulnerable. The slides are ~3 storeys tall: ~11 m tall. Kahuna's Lagoona (the shallow end of the main pool) has water blasters, hoses, jets, smaller slides, shallow bays, etc. and a small, separate pool ~30 cm deep. Toys; deck games: ping pong, giant chess, giant checkers, etc. Indoor air ~22°Celsius; pool water 30°C; hot tub 40°C (3 more than body temperature); steam room __°C; small pool __°C. Prices: 10$ admission for adults on top of the required annual membership (as of 2012 6). Free admission for minors. Minors must be with one or 2 of their parents or legal guardians, and do not require membership. Clothes lockers can be locked or not. They cost 25¢ to lock a small locker (barely holds shoes and folded clothes) and 50¢ for large. Bring quarters, please. The club has rental padlocks: 50¢ and 2$ deposit. Some lockers are in the change rooms and some are on the pool decks. SD's Newton Wave Pool location 13730 - 72nd Avenue, Surrey, BC, (at 137th Street). That is 1 block east of King George Boulevard (formerly King George Highway). The location also might use the address 7190 - 137th Street (at 72nd Avenue). Map: http://club.skinnydipper.ca/swims/wave_pool_location.php . By public transit: Newton Wave Pool is adjacent to, and south of, Newton Exchange (a bus loop). Take SkyTrain or a bus to one of these stations, then board one of these buses: —From Surrey Central Station (usually your best option from Vancouver): bus 321, 323, 324, 325, 393, or 505, whichever comes first; at bus bays 4, 5, 6, and 10 (as of 2009~). Probably the best bus is the new B-Line (express) bus from Bay 12 (as of 2014 Jan. 4), northeast of the bus loop. To go to the pre-swim social, alight from the bus at the last stop before Newton Exchange, and then walk a bit south on the east side of KGB to ABC Restaurant in the mall near KGB. —From King George Station: bus 321 or B-Line, but getting from the station to the bus stop is arduous because of the stupid design of the SkyTrain station, walking to the traffic light and back on the other side. So it is easier to change at Surrey Central Station, other factors being equal. After the swim, going away from Newton Wave Pool, the opposite is true: this station is the easier connexion. —From other places: bus 301, 340, 341, or C75. —Bus from 22nd Street Station: ?__ (one of those in line above) leaving at 7:07, 7:37, and 8:37 pm (as of 2008 summer). Cycling: www.translink.ca/en/Cycling/Cycling-Routes.aspx Bus and train: http://tripplanning.translink.bc.ca/ . Parking: Plenty of parking stalls are adjacent to the pool. From 72 Avenue, turn south onto 136-B Street, then east into the lot. —First Saturday of almost every month (starting 2014 January), 9:30-11 pm. Nudism in performance (Nip) Erotic and supposedly erotic nudity is common in performances, but it's usually brief, often a matter of 2 or 3 seconds at a time, in many movies. This page is not about that. Liberating, non-erotic nudity is very occasional in movies and in any other kind of performance or show. When we know of it, we'll include it in this calendar. That can include live plays, art showings, movies, stand-up comedy, concerts, circus acts, sport, performance art, etc. We need the help of you readers to learn of those presentations. Desert Flower. We will announce performances of both live productions and movie showings. However, they should not chicken out and censor or fake the nude scene, as they sometimes do. Your editor has seen 2 different stage productions of it in BC. Don't Dress for Dinner. Presented 2011 October in Nanaimo, BC. This is another such popular play to watch out for (and to tell us at NFIRC) when it plays elsewhere. It is a 1992 farce. (French title: Pyjamas Pour Six). Here again, the amount of nudity and near-nudity varies with the particular production. However, even without any total nudity on view, that particular play is worthwhile because it is largely about hilariously skewering society's nudity phobias and prudish customs, and not just in one scene. While adultery is a major theme, too, the erotic aspect of the play is quite minor: it could be made into a movie which would rate a G, even in the Demented States of America, in part because it is such a fluffy farce. (It should be made into a movie, but hasn't been.) Your editor has seen 2 different stage productions of it in BC, one much more visually suggestive of nudity than the other. Wreck Beach: see WBPS, the first entry in Section 10, below. 10. NUDE BEACHES and HOT SPRINGS First Nations traditionally expect or respect social nudity in many circumstances. Please respect them and their territories: almost all of so-called British Columbia. About 95% of ocean, river, creek, lake, and pond coasts in "BC" are nude-friendly. That's because when you and your friends get there—no one else is there! That often happens, even at some hot springs. Ocean tides: www.waterlevels.gc.ca/cgi-bin/tide-shc.cgi . Wreck Beach Preservation Society (WBPS) —Take a Walk on the Wild Side. http://web.me.com/photoboots/Take_a_Walk_on_the_Wild_Side _2011/Welcome.html & Section 10 below. www.planning.ubc.ca/vancouver_home/consultations/landuseplan_publichearing.php Amendment 4.1.1 c: "To consider the visual effects of campus buildings on views from Wreck Beach, any proposed project located either in the area west of Lower Mall between Memorial Road and the southern edge of the west parkade Building #900 or, in the area west of West Mall between Biological Sciences Road and Stadium Road, and that is taller than 30 m above existing grade, is required to provide a view analysis as part of UBC’s project review process." This does not say they won’t build to 18+ storeys ; it merely says they will provide a view analysis! And it addresses high rises north of Trail 6 only. That makes Totem Field fair game! Do please gently recall that their view analysis of the marine towers which are now highly visible, especially in winter, was in error for the towers and the views from the beach were exactly what our blimp analysis predicted. For more info: home/fax 604-856-9598; or cell phone 604-308-6336. Judyw [at] wreckbeach [dot] org . The WBPS is affiliated with the Federation of Canadian Naturists (FCN) (Section 14, below). Wreck Beach is one of the most popular and well-known nude beaches in the world. It is at Ulksen (or Ulksun) in Coast Salish, which the invaders call Point Grey. The Coast Salish People have sovereignty here. The invader governments classify an 8-km stretch of the coast to be within Pacific Spirit Regional Park, which surrounds the University of British Columbia (UBC). The beach is defended by the WBPS against constant attempts to cover it with a road, develop it physically for invader commerce, destroy the naturalness, reduce the nudity, etc. The WBPS presents many events listed in the calendar, mostly in the summer, but also including year-round meetings, the WBSC indoor swims (autumn through spring), indoor dances, etc. Trail 7 leads to a part of Wreck Beach preferred mostly by gay men. To get there by bus, take the little C68 bus from the UBC loop to Stadium Road and Marine Drive. Walk right (north) on Marine Drive to the first road on the left: Old Marine Drive. Walk south on that drive to the head of Trail 7. There is also some free parking there. Jane's Walk. A second Jane's Walk will be announced. Explore the flora, fauna, geology, and rich ethnographic and cultural history of a selected stretch of the 7.8-kilometre long Wreck Beach. Judy Williams is the chair of the Wreck Beach Preservation Society. As this will be along a sand and cobble beach and the weather might be wet, wear suitable footwear and dress accordingly. Birders might wish to bring their binoculars, and proper beach etiquette should be observed, especially with regard to photography. Not wheelchair accessible. Registrants will be notified of starting location. Jane's Walk is held simultaneously in cities across Canada and other countries around the world. Inspired by Jane Jacobs and her belief that in order to know your city "you have to get out and walk." http://jw10wreckbeachwalkonthewildside1.eventbrite.com/ The invaders' park authority designated greater Wreck Beach "clothing optional" around 1989, from Acadia Beach (see below) west and south to and beyond Trail 7. That designation includes Towers Beach (contrary to Chris Gudgeon's otherwise-good book, The Naked Truth). Lawsuit in 2004 against UBC: "UBC, Nudists Duel in the Sand" by Tyler Hopson: foes of planned towers above Wreck Beach fear the cliffs eroding; 2004 June 7. http://thetyee.ca/News/2004/06/07/UBC_Nudists_Duel_in_the_Sand/ Buses: Take any bus that goes to the UBC Bus Loop, as below. Bus 99 is quite fast. —West on 4th Avenude: 4, 44, 84, 258. —West on Broadway and 10th Avenude: 9, 17, 99, N17. —West on King Edward and 25th Avenude, etc: 25. —West on 41st Avenude: 41, 43, 480. —West on 49th Avenude: 49. Then, from the UBC Bus Loop, either walk to Marine Drive or take the C20 Marine Drive / UBC Loop bus to Marine Drive, which probably still continues until ~9:20 pm or later. It stops just south of the top of Trail 6 at 30-minute intervals (as of 2013 December 16). Map: www.wreckbeach.org/images/wblocal.gif . Your help is needed for the WBPS. Acadia Beach (AB) This beach is a stretch of greater Wreck Beach (see above), between Towers Beach (nude) and Spanish Banks West Beach (textile). All of those are north-east of Ulksen (Point Grey). AB is good for people less physically able, because the trail is very short and gentle. The beach itself is soft sand with some logs and rocks. Directions to Acadia Beach: Starting from the top of Trail 6 (the main trail to Wreck Beach), go north on Marine Dr. (the main road around UBC) to the big intersection of Chancellor Blvd. and Marine Dr. Turn left. Continue north, then curving east on NW Marine Dr., which goes downhill. As the road curves right, almost to sea level, there's a small dirt parking lot on the left. It adjoins the beach. Directions from beaches to the east (Jericho Beach, Kitsilano, etc.): go west on West 4th Avenue, which turns into NW Marine Dr., winding past popular clothed beaches. After you pass Spanish Banks West Beach, you'll see many trees on the right, before the uphill stretch of Marine Dr. On the right there is a small parking lot adjoining the beach. Bus to Acadia Beach: The buses along 4th Avenude (above) and that little C20 bus are the ones which go a bit closer to this part of the beach. Ask the driver if they can let you off at Chancellor Boulevard and Wesbrook. Then walk northwest on Wesbrook to Marine Drive, then east on Marine. Might take you about 15 minutes. If the C20 won't stop there, ask for Marine Drive and Chancellor Boulevard, then walk east on Marine. Metro Vancouver (MV) (The district, not the newspaper) Formerly named Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) This regional government district encompasses the Lower Mainland, approximately. It is a ruling body of the invader government. It meets monthly with the WBPS (the above listing) to co-operate on matters of mutual concern. —Usually third Thursday of the month, starting at 6 or 7 pm (sometimes 8 pm in summer): Metro Vancouver (MV) monthly meetings with WBPS, free; for dates and locations, etc., see calendar at top.* Meetings, until further notice, at Airport Square building, #130-1200 W. 73rd Ave. (foot of Hudson Street), Vancouver. In south-west Surrey around Kwomais Point. 6.5 km long: south from Crescent Beach (in south-west Surrey), then east to White Rock. For nudity, use any shore out of sight of trains and of passers-by on paths above the beach. Sometimes around a dozen nudists-naturists on a good day. 3 main naturist areas: 1. Most-used part: from Crescent Beach, walk south 10 min.; or from west end of 24th Ave., descend "101 Steps", then south 200 m (just south of the giant Crescent Rock Boulder) and around the next point (another 200 m — until sand ends and shore is seen from tracks). 2. From Ocean Park area of Surrey, go west on 15A Avenue to its end. Descend "1001 Steps". Walk north 500 m to railway marker "126 mile" (=203 km); many raised beds built above high tide. 3. From White Rock, go south on 140th Street = Nichol Road. Respect parking rules. Continue to end, Terry Road, then left (east) 1 block to stairs. Descend to beach, then 1 km right (west) to railway marker "124 Mile" (=200 km) on tracks, just inside Surrey. Use next 1.6 km of beach. Buses: Routes 351, 352, C50, and C51. Third Beach Topfree (3BT) Some women have made the north end of Third Beach in Stanley Park into a popular topfree area for everyone, as of 2009. (People are not nude there.) Some of them are connected to Burning Man Vancouver (Section 9.1 above). Third Beach is on the west coast of Stanley Park, which is in north-central Vancouver, BC. Theoretically, all public places are topfree as much for women as for men in Canada, although that is practiced seldom by females. See legality, below, in Section 11, TERA. Chesterman Beach (CB) This long-nude beach is on the north end of Pacific Rim National Park encompassing Long Beach. On the west coast of Vancouver Island, BC, between Tofino and Ucluelet. Park rangers will direct nudists there, probably to keep us nudists from being nude elsewhere. By land, from east, via Port Alberni, BC. Update: The nude area might be moved to Florencia Bay, or that might be an additional nude beach. Red Sands Beach (RS) Nude beach near Nelson, BC. Also, camping is there, reportedly. 3 Mile Beach (3M) Nude beach north of Penticton, BC. Contact OSNS (Section 9.2 above), which sometimes goes there. For the ones in BC: www.nwhotsprings.net/british_columbia.htm . Clothing Optional BC (COBC) (In practice, clothing optional means the same as nude optional, but using the latter allows us to eschew that dreaded word "clothing".) http://members.shaw.ca/co-bc . 11. FREEDOM AMONG TEXTILES (and miscellaneous groups) The teasing nick-name "textiles" means people who wear textile (or other attire) socially to hide their genitals, breasts, bums, etc. So this section "freedom among textiles" includes possibilities for being nude or topfree non-commercially and non-offencively among clothed people, including when not expected. For topfreedom, see also --RM, Section 9.1, above. --3BT, Section 10, above. The first 8 entries below relate to topfreedom, including: --Topfree swims. --Dykes on Bikes. --CFOX Radio. --Vancouver Folk Music Festival. --Take Back the Night. Topfree Equality Rights Association (TERA) Association du droit égal aux seins nus Your equal right to remove your top in public and bare your chest, regardless of your sex, is legally established in BC, Ontario, and Manitoba, but denied in Saskatchewan. That is a return to First Nations custom—and a great boon to breastfeeding. Places includes beaches, parks, pools, sidewalks, your own property, and some private businesses and premises open to the public. Wherever one sex can bare their chests in public sight, so can the other, according to the courts. See equal rights section of the Canadian Constitution. (Web site?) (Such rights are established also in parts of the USA: California coast; San Francisco, CA; New York state; Hawaii; Maine; Ohio; Texas; Washington, DC; etc. Europe and Australia are generally much more advanced on this.) Even if the authorities illegally harass you, if you're calm and respectful, they'll generally give you just a warning so that you can avoid arrest, fines, etc. Then you either cover up or wait while they check with their supervisors and illegally detain you. In BC, cite the court case Maple Ridge vs. Meyer, 2000 June 8 www.courts.gov.bc.ca/jdb%2Dtxt/sc/00/09/s00%2D0902.htm . 2000 BCSC 902, Docket # A 972072, Registry Vancouver. The case document is also at: www.tera.ca/legal.html#Meyer . For problems with Vancouver city parks staff at beaches, parks, pools, community centres, etc., cordially remind them of the letter that all staff got from the parks department. That letter (approximately 2000 June) instructed their staff to comply with that court ruling. We have a report of occasional topfree at Kitsilano Beach. Breastfeeding while hiding most of your breasts is even less likely to draw illegal and immoral harassment (from the authorities and others). If you are bolder, though, you'll enhance your rights and increase your mother-child love by letting your child see more and feel more of you, which also lets your child learn your pride. They say "Prizes for the loveliest and most creative people!" That and other things on Jeff's Web pages indicate that maybe they need us nudists and topfrees to teach them a bit more liberation, so they can be less sleazy. However, let's hope for the best. Police might arrest you for nudity, a criminal charge, but haven't yet in BC (since 2002). Minors attending would be risky. Nevertheless, topfree is perfectly legal in the ride in BC: see TERA above at the top of this section. Daring nude and near-nude cyclists tour the city together. They get away with it in many cities. NEWS and LETTERS (In order of newest to oldest) Going to Wreck Beach without hiking a steep trail by Korky Day, 2014 June 20. The trail from North-West Marine Drive to Acadia Beach is very low and mild compared to all the others. If that is too hard for you, you'll have to start further east at Spanish Banks Beach if you are walking. It's a long walk, maybe an hour, with a few barriers, like logs and rocks. Avoid high tide, for sure. Have you considered water travel? I'd go by canoe or rowboat, etc., if I had bad legs and good arms. If those are not possible or are too arduous, you can use the stretcher I made with which people can carry you on the trail. Or you can make your own stretcher. It's easy. I learned how in Scouts in 1960. Here's how: Get 2 long poles: a little longer than you are tall. I use trees branches I pruned in the back yard. Get a blanket or strong cloth, not slippery, about your height and quadruple your width. Lay the blanket on the ground. Place the 2 poles along the length of the blanket dividing it into thirds. Fold each of the outside thirds over a pole so that they overlap in the middle. It's ready to use. The friction of the top 2 layers of cloth against each other, with your weight on them, keeps your stretcher from coming apart. Now get 4 strong volunteers to grab it by the 4 ends of the poles and carry you. Volunteers can be recruited at the trail most days. Test on level land first. If you want to use my stretcher, ask me. NIFTY planning 2 swims / month and other events 2013 September 28, revised December 30. The Van Tan Swim Club will suspend their indoor swims for a year or more, as of 2014 January, because of William Griffin Pool being rebuilt. To fill the gap, NIFTY will have 2 swims per month starting Saturday, January 11, in addition to the current last-Satuday routine. Skinnydippers are changing to the first Saturday. That means you'll still have 4 indoor swims per month most months through June presented by Skinnydipper at Newton Wave, Wreck Beach Swim Club at Lord Byng, and NIFTY at Templeton. Letter to the NFIRC editor published here 2013 February 1, received 2012 September 14: 'Prophet' by a woman who visited Syria I have travelled to the Middle East twice. Syria is 90% muslim. It is their prophet who is telling Muslim women to wear the hijab for protection. Protection from? Protection from men. Men in undeveloped nations are unable to channel their sexual energy. Muslim Arab men are in the majority unsophisticated and have lower levels of education. Also, because the Middle East is a war zone, women are safer if they are sexually unprovocative. Also, they live in countries where the level of censorship is maximum. They don't see nudity or swimsuits anywhere. When I went to a swimming pool in Syria, a young male swam underneath the water with a mask and pinched my labia. I screamed and went toward him with the intention of hitting him. I couldn't catch him. I then told the lifeguard, he laughed at me with the boy and said I was crazy. When we left the pool we were told to not tell anyone what had happened. If we told, we would be forbidden to return to the pool. We would be punished. Meanwhile he got no punishment. I kept my mouth shut because it was over 40 degrees celsius everyday. We needed and wanted to be able to return to the pool. Anytime we went out, we needed to be acompanied by a male. My aunt would walk with an umbrella at all times, because the men are constantly trying to pinch women's buttocks in the street. This is the truth. I was there. I lived it. I experienced it. I know you will argue that the women are now safe in Canada. Why can't they just hang up their hijab? Because, they are unable to. They are extremely vulnerable to men. They are 100% untrained at protecting themselves from masculine desire. It's like walking into a lion's den for them. Men are preying on women who they sense are not "men smart". These women can very easily be abused, taken advantage of. Very easily. They are not aggressive women able to yell stuff at a man. They are conditioned to be submissive. They also don't know martial arts, for the most part. I spoke with a Muslim woman who graduated from SFU. Feeling momentarily free she removed her hijab and began circulating in society. A young white man, about her age, fell in love with her, they started dating. He became too clingy, she felt fearful and unprepared. She got scared. She phoned the cops, said he was stalking her. She went through a hellish time. She did not know what was happening to her in her life, she began eating junk food at McDonald's, gained weight and began seeing a psychiatrist. He medicated her. She then started having nightmares about him at night. She would wake up in such a panic that she wasn't able to tell it was only a bad dream, she thought he would come after her so she ended up phoning the police in the middle of the night. The police came and they told her she needed to seek help from her psychiatrist. You see, a muslim woman does not know what to do with a man other than get married, give birth to children, rear his kids. Basically, raise a family. Go to the mosque, obey the prophet Muhammed and God, Allah. Dating, espacially a white man is for them like taking acid. They will likely hallucinate a hellish nightmare from being clueless about what's going on. I have to let you go now, please remain co-operative in trying to empathize. ---from a very unrepressed woman, [name withheld by request]. NIFTY Web publication hacked! 2012 September 30. by Korky Day, NFIRC volunteer publisher-editor. See NIFTY's entry in Section 6.5 above on this page and its listings in the calendar on the previous page. I am very sorry and angry at whoever has attacked and ruined the NIFTY Web publication. NIFTY will recover somehow as soon as possible. In the meantime, we at NFIRC will try to fill the gap. But remember that both are volunteer efforts. Probably because of the hack-job, the NIFTY swim 2012 September 29 suffered slightly decreased attendance when I expected an increase. We had spent many hours in a promotional campaign to recruit new members for that date in particular, but only 1 or 2 newcomers came. The event was still fun, and might have broken even financially, but we must respond with determination for our cause. Please attend all the nudist events that you might enjoy. Help us recruit members and encourage continued attendance. If anything on-line looks suspicious, please contact us. I suggest that you telephone people. NFIRC does not have an office or an office number, but ask me, and most likely I will give you my personal telephone number. Meanwhile, NIFTY (of which I am a active member) will be responding and making a come-back. Swim suits not harmless at Wreck Beach Letter rejected for publication by The Province, as far as we know. To: [email protected] The Province, 2012 August 2. Dear editor, Province writer Patrick Johnston ("A beginner's guide to Wreck Beach", The Province, July 31, 2012 www.theprovince.com/beginner+guide+Wreck+Beach/7016026/story.html#ixzz22PQwwXRp) misleadingly wrote, " . . . if you choose to keep your bathing suit on - and that's very acceptable to the beach regulars . . .". Yes, bathing suits are acceptable to some Wreck Beach regulars. Many others of us, though, see the fearsome mental strait-jacket of body terror and shame as a blight on any beach, as is wearing a burqa or other prisoners' uniform. Do you want to spend your whole life as a cowering captive of mental-sexist-social-religious-commercial-political oppression? If not, join us nudists in spreading freedom, love, and peace. Korky Day Lifeguards told to watch swimmers by Korky Day, 2012 January 11. In the last few days, the head lifeguards of Vancouver and North Vancouver both have told me that they have instructed (or will instruct) all their guards to stop 2 practices that I think have endangered pool occupants. I had complained to them about a disturbing new trend in the last few years. Some lifeguards have sat as far from the pool as possible. Some have clustered with each other and chatted at length instead of putting enough attention to guarding. Both supervisors David Fletcher of North Vancouver and Sean Heaney of Vancouver said they are re-educating their staffs. Please tell me and them if you notice violations. Can anyone tell me if air passengers can choose to strip for the inspectors instead of being X-rayed or patted? Please answer to korkyday [insert a with a circle round it] yahoo [dot] com . Fore-Skin For-Her (seminar 2012 Jan. 10 in Vancouver and repeated periodically thereafter?) From www.artofloving.ca/seminars/seminar-topics/fore-skin-her See also other courses, and the sponsoring group, The Art of Loving, above in Section 8. Did you know that women were almost 6 times likelier to achieve vaginal orgasm when the man had an (uncircumcised) natural penis and that they were significantly likelier to achieve multiple vaginal orgasms, as well? Did you also know that intact men (uncircumcised) usually lasted longer and that premature ejaculation was significantly more common among circumcised men? In fact, surveyed women preferred sex with a natural penis by a margin of 9 to 1!!! Why? This is the first seminar to explain, in simple terms, the many sexual functions and benefits of the foreskin, not only for the man, but especially for the woman on the receiving end of the penis during intercourse. You will learn how circumcision adversely alters a man’s sexual performance —to his detriment, and to his female partner's, why the surgical-altered, circumcised penis makes it difficult —in some cases impossible—for most women to achieve orgasm from intercourse and why millions of North American women routinely experience chafing, redness, soreness, and discomfort (even pain) as a consequence of "circumcised intercourse." You will also learn about some of the many adverse health effects that having regular sex with circumcised men can have on a healthy woman. Who can benefit from this seminar? --Women Married to (or in a Relationship with) Men With Foreskins— Learn about the differences women noticed between making love with circumcised men and men with natural penises. --Women Married to (or in a Relationship with) Circumcised Men—learn how to free yourself to experience true sexual fulfillment, increased vaginal orgasmic success, and the betterments in your relationship happiness this will bring. --Prospective Parents—provides everything you need to know to make an informed decision for your child. --Circumcised Men—sexual pleasure beyond your highest expectations—unlike anything you've ever experienced before—will be your reward for attending this seminar. --Men With Foreskins - the many sexual benefits and functions of the foreskin are explained in detail. --Gay Men—the most important information you'll ever get about the male sex organ. --Health Care Professionals, Doctors, Nurses, Childbirth Educators, Marriage Counselors, Sex Therapists, and Others Concerned with Human Sexuality—the information in this seminar will enlighten you on the sexual issues of this topic, as well as other aspects—a must-know for any professional who advises people on circumcision or sexuality. The above is from The Art of Loving. Topfree Occupy Wall Street by Korky Day, NFIRC editor, 2011 October 5. Today I read an e-news story: "The 'Occupy Wall Street' kids finally got naked". An included colour photograph shows the bare chests of 3 young women censored by the publisher, but not the 2 young men. A printed pinko protest sign in the photo says, "A job is a right! Capitalism doesn't work!" (I agree. See the first page here at www.korky.ca .) Another sign says "We didn't say look. We said listen!" Some protesters chanted, "We can't afford shirts!" ---Anonymous article in Metro daily newspaper, 2011 September 22 (revised Sep 26): www.metro.us/newyork/national/article/977074--the-occupy-wall-street-kids-finally-got-naked-nsfw You'll learn to live with the smoking ban (double entendre headline!) by Korky Day, NFIRC editor, 2011 September 27. Perhaps you feel threatened or appalled at the news: Smoking will be banned at Wreck Beach (Sect. 10, previous page) as of 2012 January 1. Unfortunately, the Wreck Beach Preservation Society (Sect. 10) got its good name besmirched by opposing the ban. However, perhaps you and the WBPS do not understand that today's sophisticated approach to smoking control is way ahead of the ham-fisted approach of alcohol prohibition a century ago. It lost; we are winning. The movement back then was well-meaning. AA hadn't started. Women, especially, were sick of their men blowing their pay-cheques on booze--and the family going hungry. Few women got any significant money. Prohibition was a quasi-feminist effort then, largely, as was the (earlier) anti-slavery movement. Men reacted violently, and they defeated prohibition, as they had brought in 'Jim Crow'. Compare that to our successful (so far) anti-nicotine movement of the last 55 years or so. Imagine how it's going to go at Wreck Beach. The ban comes in. They put up a few signs. Maybe there's a smoking-designated zone about 5 by 5 metres. (Like the unofficial one I saw a year ago at the otherwise smoke-free campus of the University of North Carolina--in a tobacco state!) No extra funds are allocated for enforcement. Not much change for a year or 2. Some smokers comply immediately, according to their personalities and desires. The more rebellious (and more intoxicated) smokers break the rule, but, over the years, get used to the idea. Sometimes they comply; sometimes they don't. You'll see smokers on the beach endure dirty looks and snide comments, feel guilty, act defencive, feel lonely, and realize they're wrong--hurting others and themselves. Eventually, over a few years, almost all comply voluntarily. They don't hide in the woods to smoke because enforcement never gets harsh--or even particularly effective. After a few more years, so few smokers break the rule that real enforcement, if it finally comes, is sparse and cheap. Also, the surviving smokers, by then, mostly older, are getting weaker, more tired, and half-dead from their addiction. Their feeble arguments don't convince or impress anybody, and they know it. Gradually, more and more smokers realize that this gentle way the government went about it is really for their own good. Many smokers are actually (sometimes secretly) glad when each new smoking restriction prompts them to quit or cut down. They almost all want to quit smoking, anyway, remember! The difference in the 2 approaches is between harsh authoritarianism--and loving, patient, but persistent, nudging. We've watched this progression with each baby step of the anti-nicotine movement. First, in the 1960s, little warnings on the decks. Over the years, they raise tobacco taxes occasionally. Then, no smoking in certain parts of the hospital. A few years later we achieved smoking sections in restaurants. Now we've advanced from indoor restrictions to the outdoors. See? Slow, but sure. Tortoise vs. hare. When the government does a good thing, there's no reason to oppose it. When government promotes war, the exploitation of women, body shame, and towers on the cliff-top, of course, we must still oppose them. But having a government and laws is not necessarily bad. Rather, our goal must be GOOD government and laws. Since our invader governments now are illegitimate and undemocratic, it's hard to see that they could do some good things, but they do. This is one such case. Another, similar, case is closing the beach at sunset. That, while it is especially irritating to the innocent, probably saves a lot of lives which would be lost or ruined due to night drinking and brawling. If human beings never drank, we might be able to use the beach all night (see next article below). Just like if smokers would always stay downwind of others, never littered their butts and wrappers, never started forest fires, and never stifled their desire to go nude with the drug nicotine, we might not need the smoking ban at the beach. RCMP vs. Wreck Beach boozers Posted 2011 July 14, in The Ubyssey's comments (if it gets by the moderator) by Korky Day at http://ubyssey.ca/news/drinking-on-wreck-beach888/#comment-45575 The police wouldn't bother the boozers if so many of them didn't cause serious problems. I've been picking up their damn broken bottles for 41 years, and that's the least of it. If Canadians want European-style boozing, let them act like Europeans. It's a myth, though, that Europe has less alcoholism, but maybe it isn't manifested in public. Better to get natural at Wreck Beach: nude and sober. Desert Flower opposes genital excision Movie review by Korky Day. Added here 2011 March 19; slightly revised 2011 July 14. This movie, Desert Flower, is not about nudism, as far as I can tell without seeing it. However, it is about the related topics of (1) your right to body integrity, (2) body image, (3) clothing fashion, and (4) feminism. If you know whether or not it shows any nudity, please tell us. MPAA rated R for some violent content, a scene of sexuality and language. Do they show a mutilated crotch? My guess is that it would be too painful for the audience, so they don't. 2 hours long. Released 2009, but only now playing in a few theatres in North America: starting 2011 March 18. If you know of any showings in BC, please tell us. http://vancouver.mrmovietimes.com/movies/Desert-Flower-Wustenblume.html Quote from a movie review by Melissa Silvestri: Desert Flower is a deeply emotional drama (with light comedic moments) that tells the true story of Waris Dirie, a Somali woman who had undergone female genital mutilation at 3 years old, escaped her rural home village before an arranged marriage at 13, became an indentured servant to the Somali ambassador in London, and then, by chance, was discovered and became a supermodel. But despite her fairy tale rags to riches story, Dirie was still haunted by her past, and all the celebrity brought on by her looks couldn’t deny that what happened to her as a child was an unnecessary act of violence, so she used her position and fame to raise awareness about the issue and became a UN spokeswoman against female genital mutilation (FGM). Vancouver Fuel Delivery Project opposed by SUN 2011 February 21. The Vancouver Airport Fuel Facility Corporation's (VAFFC) Vancouver Airport Fuel Delivery Project (VAFDP) application to the BC Environmental Assessment Office was posted on the BCEAO website this week. It calls for half a million barrel oil tankers loaded with jet fuel to enter the south arm of the Fraser River to an off-loading and 80 million litre storage facility near the George Massey tunnel and a 15 km. pipeline across Richmond to the Vancouver Airport. The public comment period [ended] April 11, 2011. A public open house has been scheduled for Monday, March 7 [ . . . ] Please review the attached news release from the BC Environmental Assessment Office for more details on this important meeting. We encourage anyone interested in this project to get involved by attending the Open House and reviewing the information available on the BC Environmental Assessment Office website (www.eao.gov.bc.ca ) and the VAFFC project website (www.vancouverairportfuel.ca ). Comments on this environmental assessment should be made to the BC Environmental Office where they will be posted for public and governmental scrutiny. SUN opposes this project which we believe is unnecessary and whose environmental risks far outweigh any fuel cost savings to the airlines using YVR that are the only shareholders of the VAFFC. In particular, the decision by the VAFFC to not consider rail shipments of jet fuel from Cherry Point in Washington State, where a large portion of aviation fuel for YVR is currently delivered from, needs to be seriously questioned since rail deliveries from Alberta refineries tied with the tanker plan as the preferred option. Choosing only one jet fuel delivery method for the Vancouver International Airport while threatening the estuary of B.C.'s largest river, the wildlife preserves in this region, our wild salmon stocks along with the public safety of residents living near the proposed pipeline means that the tanker plan for the Fraser needs to be scuttled. You can review SUN's detailed examination of the VAFDP and the errors, blatant omissions, questionable data and outright fallacies contained within this project that were previously posted on the BCEAO website on May 26, 2010 at the following location: http://a100.gov.bc.ca/appsdata/epic/documents/p346/1275423183785_e71376a301f00b1753abff676ef16d8bb 985b33d1077ebd4d2b4d957498fd9ab.pdf —by Don Pitcairn, president, Surrey's United Naturists (SUN) sun-assn [at] hotmail [dot ] com www.crescentrockbeach.org Telephone 604-328-7433. Airport X-rays fatal--possible nude option Protests keep arising about the screening of human bodies for weapons at airports. Prudes worry about the screening agents seeing them near-nude on the X-ray machines. Health professionals warn of the danger of X-rays, which increases with repetition. The authorities give passengers the options of cancer-causing X-rays or "an enhanced pat-down" (groping?). Neither option is the nudist option, which is simply to strip and show that you are unarmed. Nobody is hurt that way. It's fool-proof. No 170,000$ machines to buy. Quick and easy. Ralph Nader says you have to assert your right to forgo the machine BEFORE you get into the scanner line. The only reason the stripping option is not being talked about much yet is people's paranoia about nudity. Keen nudists would not mind seeing nudity or being seen nude. If anyone tries the nudist option at an airport, please tell us how it goes! —Written 2010 November 17 / 19. www.asiaone.com/Health/News/Story/A1Story20101115-247226.html Yahoo e-mail ruins NFIR Calendar records The latest version of Yahoo Classic e-mail replaced the version your editor was using in 2010 October~. Celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Nude-In at Wreck Beach 2010 August 22, Sunday, 2-9 pm. (one day before the actual anniversary) Followed by general discussion. Near the foot of Trail 6, Wreck Beach (Ulksen Beach), in so-called Pacific Spirit Regional Park, Vancouver, BC. by "Mr. Natural" (Korky Day), organiser of the original Nude-In. Come and re-live those days of youthful rebellion, naturalness, innovation, elation, solidarity, freedom, intelligence, change, hope, love, and peace. Go nude unless you're too cowardly, repressed, or rude. Bring sunscreen. Please respect everyone's right to refuse photography. When I was 22 years old, in 1970, I was frustrated that the Vancouver area had no nude beach of which I was aware. So I announced a Nude-In (inspired by civil rights "sit-ins", etc.) for 1970 August 23, Sunday, in the radical newspaper of which I was one of the collective owners, the Georgia Straight. Then people told me that there was already a local nude beach that was not very well-known: Wreck Beach. Some were fearful that I would spoil it, their secret skinny-dipping spot, with publicity and hordes of attenders. Others welcomed nudists coming out of the closet. Arrests ensued. Court cases. Victory. No one charged with nudity in the following 40 years. Let us acknowledge our debt and gratitude to the First Nations, including the Musqueam, who of course have sovereignty over Wreck Beach. The greedy, criminal, invader governments (Canada and the provinces) continue, generation after generation, to refuse to negotiate aboriginal land claims in good faith. Point Grey is "Ulksen" in Musqueam, I've read. The First Nations had no swimsuits or, as far as I can tell, little or no false modesty. They lived largely nude in warm weather. Then those hang-ups were imposed on the indigeni nations by the European invaders, including their missionaries and authorities. At this event I hope to provoke a good discussion of the successes, failures, and future of Wreck Beach. Will successive generations of humans defend or neglect what we hippies, nudists, and allies tried to create? Will the moneyed and prudish interests finally get their road on the beach all around the peninsula? Please contact me ahead of the celebration with offers of participation, questions, suggestions, etc.: korkyday [insert a with a circle round it] yahoo [dot] com . —published here 2010 August 11, revised slightly 2010 11 18. Yahoo hides "nude" e-mail: shocking test results You are taking a risk if you include the word "nude" in an e-letter, including in the appended previous correspondance. Such a message might get filtred out as spam by Yahoo (and maybe other e-mail services), it seems by my test results. It might be better in your e-mail to use abbreviations or substitutes for the word, such as N or n***. Also, you might want to send a copy to yourself of e-letters that you send, and then check your spam box, just to if they arrive there. If so, try to determine what words you used triggered the sorting as spam. Also I suggest that you check your Spam or Bulk box to rescue such letters going to you. And I wonder what all the taboo words are! — 2010 August 9. September update on the crisis: Introducing "nwd" as a new spelling for "nude" as practised by us true nwdists! The word "nude" and its practice has long been tainted by people who exploit it, in a sexist way, for money. But I realized that we have a real crisis when my innocent nude e-mail got caught in a "spam" filtre! So I decided that we must take action! Nudists of the world arise! Dodge those spam filtres (and butterfly nets)! Use new spellings for nude in e-mail, such as "n*de", "nood", "nuud" (I coined 2010 9 23), and "nwd" (I coined 2010 9 17). That last one is the cutest nwdist word, eh? Those "w"s have the same sound as the "oo" in "mood". A "w" is also used like that in a few other words, such as pwka (meaning "ghost") in the great movie and play Harvey by Mary Chase. Similarly, write nwd-friendly, nwdism, nwdity, nwdly, etc. Also, some Canadians, British, and others might want to match their pronunciation by spelling it "nywd". — Korky Day, 2010 September 17~ to 23. Men, see the movie Babies with a woman! Movie review by Korky Day. See the upcoming movie showing in the calendar near the top and in Nip in Section 10! 2010 May 12, revised 2010 August 10. French title Bébé(s). A documentary movie by French men about 4 babies from 4 countries is not considered fit for all audiences in the USA. I saw it 2010 May 11 in a small theatre holding maybe 50 women and 3 men (I'm in the second category). We saw scenes in Mongolia, Japan, Namibia, and the USA continually inter-spliced. The USA authorities gave it a PG classification: "parental guidance". Are they trying to protect tender eyes from the sight of one baby slapping another? Gosh, no, they are paranoid about the sight of breastfeeding! They lie through their teeth and call it "cultural and maternal nudity throughout". Seeing only breasts is not "nudity"! We were shown no vaginas, merely a couple of baby penises. Furthermore, the numbskull authorities don't understand that all nudity is "cultural". The sight of naughty bits was occasional, not "throughout", and mostly in Namibia. Nobody over the age of one appeared to be a real nudist. What this commercial release seemed to be attempting was to entertain us while opening our minds to other cultures' ways of upbringing. A modest goal, and it succeeded. A more helpful, more urgent goal would have been to present real evidence about the health and sustainability of various child-raising practices. Instead, we who are already well-informed will notice the superiority of old traditions like breastfeeding, while the naive will judge the 2 bottle-fed babies in the 2 modern countries to be doing fine and maybe even being better raised than the 2 exclusively-breastfed babies. All in all, though, Babies is much better than America's Funniest Home Videos. Men, risk the boredom of a movie without car chases or sex. See it with a woman about whom you care. France; 79 minutes. Review 2009 July 13, revised December 29. Dust and Illusions is intriguing, well-done, thought-provoking, and illuminating (pardon the pun!). However, I still am not sure if I ever want to attend the festival. I like art, but having so much of it over-sized seems a waste. Burning is a waste and harms nature. Fireworks are symbolic of war and horror. Perhaps all that fits with the male megalomaniacal destructive themes and nature of the event, even though some of the art is shown being made by women. We learn in the movie that Burning Man has always been male-dominated. The movie was also very male-dominated (director, narrator, most interviewees, etc.). I would have liked to see scenes of walking around in the daytime and seeing what art and activities people brought that were not huge, not burning, and not subsidized by ticket sales. I've heard that such things there are quite amazing. Also, I'm attracted to Burning Man's camping, community spirit, near total lack of selling (not mentioned in the movie), potential for liberation, fun, and nudity. I'm repelled by the widespread use of what I call "drope" (alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, pharmaceuticals, grass, and other drugs). A veteran female attender told me that at the event there's a lot of sex with people whose ability to consent is impaired by drope, including the date-rape drug. That was mentioned only obliquely in the movie. The movie mentioned "deadly accidents" at the event, but left it unclear how many deaths. It seems the sympathetic director's intent was to help "Burners" improve their event. Dust and Illusions is a fine attempt at that. I hope it succeeds. Letter from the Mother of Topfree in BC 2008 March 19 To the editor, About five years ago Evangeline [Godron] and I went topfree (on public transit) from Maple Ridge to White Rock and back. We could have walked to White Rock faster. I have photos of Evangeline being harrassed at the Surrey SkyTrain station (by the RCMP) she never did put her top on and neither did I. I tried to take photos of the RCMP officers and they hid their faces. I told the RCMP officers they hid their faces in shame. Thank goodness for freedom of speech! Every time Evangeline and I changed our mode of public transportation the police boarded whatever we were riding and demanded we leave. We said one word: no. We would wrap our legs around the chair we were sitting on and I showed the police my case documents, and section 15 (equality) of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and they backed off. In fact, I carried extra copies of my case and I would offer my case to the police. Tell women that since men go topfree in public, including public transit, then so can women. Women can go topfree on public property any time they want. If no one believes me I will go topfree on the bus and on SkyTrain. —from Linda Meyer, A.A.B.A.P.B.D., Independent Scholar. New vegetarian restaurant socials after NIFTY swims Written after the successful event (2008 June; revised 2010 8 10) We were happy to get 4 nudists brave enough to try a vegetarian restaurant, unlike the previous attempts! Who knew a carrot was so scary?! For more about it, see: Written after the (pardon the expression:) "dud" event (2008 February) Vancouver-area nudes haven't tried a meatless restaurant as a group for a few years. (It then was the Naam Restaurant on 4th Avenue, just east of MacDonald St.) Therefore, your editor invited you to come to one (clothed), starting after the 2008 February NIFTY swim. All of you chickened out (pardon the expression!) Come on, naked people, one vegetarian meal isn't going to ruin your life! Some of you definitely need to be healthier, so why don't you try again? The restaurant is near Templeton Pool and is called Deserts, the Falafel Oasis (named after the desert land of North Africa, not "desserts" with 3 "S"s). 905 Commercial Drive, about 5 blocks west of the pool. It's semi-cafeteria style, so you won't have to wait long. Brown rice dishes, smoothies, tabbouleh salad, etc. Some is mildly spicy. Pay only for the food you order, if any. Low prices, too. Chef's special dinner is only 6$. They have a nice deck outside. Restaurant telephones 604-251-4171, 568-0776. For dates, see calendar at top. Costs, rides, or other problems? For the few who do have the courage to try it, it’s a lot more difficult when surrounded by clothed people instead of nude people. Here are 15 points to make our case: 1. We originally asked for a nudist beach in 1999. 2. Lawyers for city hall told the councillors that city hall could not get into the business of forcing people to get nude. The only alternative word was “clothing-optional”. 3. Therefore “clothing-optional” is lawyer-speak for “nudist”. 4. The proposed designation was always intended to accommodate the people who wanted to get nude. 5. It was not ‘designated’ to create another clothing beach. 6. We want clothed people to think about what they are doing before coming to this ‘designated’ section. 7. We expect people to make up their mind to get nude on this beach before they leave home. 8. Because we are becoming a victim of our own success, the additional clothed people coming down to the beach have been like a tsunami causing the percentage of nudists to drop below 20% as the percentage of clothed people climbs to over 80% on many weekends. 9. Four years ago, there were 55% nudists. This year the percentage of nude people has been 30% to less than 20%. At this rate, the trend will drop to 10%, then 5% nudists in a couple of years. A reasonable percentage of clothed people should be less than 10% and nudist people should be more than 90%. 10. An analogy example is two hobby groups, model railroaders and model airplane makers. If too many of the railroad group attends a meeting of the airplane group consistently, the airplane group cannot claim to be a model airplane group anymore. It has become a model railroad group when the percentage of model railroaders is 80% in the model airplane group. This is not fair to the airplane group. 11. For people who want to try being nude, it’s a lot easier when they are surrounded by nude people. It’s a lot tougher if you are surrounded by clothed people. Therefore clothed people are intimidating the people who want to be nude for the first time. 12. For the reasons above, the idea by clothed people that “clothing-optional” means they have the option of wearing their clothes is wrong. 13. Every nudist knows that clothing-optional beach means that it’s a nudist beach. 14. The OPTION for clothed people is 11 other beaches where clothed people have a MONOPOLY since as a nudist, we can’t go to any other beach. 15. This is our ONLY beach we can use as naturists/nudists. IMPORTANT We wish you to show respect for the nudists. To respect the Nudists, please GO NUDE. Our objective is to save this beach as a nudist beach to avoid it becoming another clothing beach. Thanks for your co-operation. HBN - Hanlan's Beach Naturists. Religious rights vs. human rights by Korky Day We should support freedom of religion and should respect others' traditions, cultures, and customs, as long as there is no good reason to do otherwise. I say that as an atheist. However, all so-called rights must be limited when they go "over the line", undeniably killing, maiming, torturing, and oppressing people. Examples of practices to stop » Undue pressure to believe or accept any interpretation of truth or right, even an interpretation allegedly mandated by a god, tradition, or belief system. That pressure leads to authoritarian or theocratic religion. You see, freedom of belief, by definition, includes the freedom NOT to believe. » Oppression of women and children. » Oppression of sexual and sexual-identity minorities. » Genital mutilation of boys and girls. » Honour killing. » Killing a man who violates the alleged property of another man (her husband or father). » Rape to "cure" homosexuality or AIDS. » Oppression of harmless sexual minorities and sexual-identity minorities. » Involuntary or pressured marriage. » Marriage when one is too young or restricted to give reasonable consent. » More pressure on females to be chaste than on males. » Shaming or other oppression of masturbaters. » Barriers to abortion, birth control, and sex education. » Interference (by a husband, family, or by institutions) with the mother-child bond which normally is established by natural birth and by ample, unhampered breastfeeding. (Clothing the breast reduces natural breastfeeding.) » Pressure on teens and older women to get breast implants to impress men or to feel better about themselves. » Foot-binding. » Pressure on males to wear head coverings to show their dominance. » Pressure on females to wear confining, restrictive, and "modest" head coverings and other clothing to show their subservience as property and to "protect" them from the sight of excitable or jealous men outside the family. » Restrictions on nudity, except when they are necessary for safety or hygiene. » Slavery. » A caste system. » Financial and other pressures for sex work. » Alcohol as a "sacrament". » Torture. » Execution. » Invasion. » Conquest. Until the last century or so, veiling and hair covering was done mostly by women of the richest classes of some Moslem countries. It was and is a strong status symbol. Many mistakenly believe that the religion mandates such covering. Sadly, the practice is now infecting all strata of society, people who are striving to be prestigous, like the rich. Everything in that list (above) has been justified as protected expressions of religion or culture. Notice anything else about that list? Those are all traits of patriarchy and male dominance! Such practices are absent (or much less) in matriarchal or mother-centred cultures, such as wiccans, Iroquois, Mosuo, and matriarchal pagans and animists. --2011 December 13, revised 2013 December 30. End of article "Religious rights vs. human rights". A new plea for unity among nudists Recently there have been some conflicts among local nudists. You know who you are! Please ask yourselves: Have I done everything I could to resolve a conflict before involving others, especially non-nudists? Am I letting petty jealousies and criticisms harm our movement? Am I taking well-intentioned actions to be intentionally or negligently bad? Am I making mountains out of molehills? Am I forgiving and open to practical resolution? Am I bending the truth to make myself look better? Am I admitting when I'm wrong? Am I hurting myself with my rashness? Am I keeping a sense of humour? Is nudist unity a priority for me? NFIR is doing what we can to mediate, as should others. Please contact us at korkyday [insert a with a circle round it] yahoo [dot] com . —Korky Day, 2011 April 13, resolution still needed as of 2014 June 10. Most popular answer about crying child on Yahoo Questions is crazy They failed even to mention breastfeeding or topfree On any Yahoo question, the answer voted the most popular might be all wrong. Not only the general public, but even the mainstream "experts" are often wrong. The problem of a child crying is treated as a discipline problem in the answer in the link below. No, a crying child is not a bad child who is trying to spoil your normal life, as they implied. The child is usually crying to be breastfed, which they need, or for some other non-malicious reason. A naturally raised child might need to breastfeed several times an hour, not just several times a day, as most Western experts stupidly say. To freely breastfeed is why almost all your female ancestors were topfree—so the children could have a few sucks any time. That's natural and healthy. If you don't like that, don't be a parent. Any less breastfeeding will damage your child's physical and emotional health. And will damage the mother's physical and emotional health. Added 2009 October (revised 2010 2 16): Legality of topfree and nudity Below is our answer to a reader's enquiry regarding Canadian law. This is not legal advice. Confirm with a lawyer. Topfree Topfree means bare-chested males and females. Canada's constitution quarantees sexual equality. Such equality has been proven in the courts of BC and Ontario for chests. Elsewhere you might have to be the first to prove likewise in court. If you are suckling a child, you have even further legal and moral reason to uncover your chest. Equality means that on all public property, if one sex is allowed to be topfree, the other sex is, too. That includes public beaches, streets, parks, and pools. That also includes private property, if the owner allows it, even if visible from public property. If you are topfree in a place where neither sex is allowed to be topfree, they can make you comply or leave. Even there, however, topfree (bare-chested) is not in itself a criminal offence. Unfortunately, many police and people in the public don't know the constitution, so they might hassle you. Fortunately, they won't convict you, unless the court precedents are disregarded or unless you are in Saskatchewan. The precedents will probably hold in today's political climate. The authorities will back down when their superior officer clues them in, or else if you back down. For more, see TERA, above, in Section 12. For other provinces, the same might be the case, but might have to be proven in a test case in court. Volunteer defendants and lawyers? Nudity Public nudity is a more complex issue than topfree. Unlike topfree, nudity is a criminal offence: the Nudity Act in the federal criminal code. That applies everywhere that others can see you, including your neighbour looking over your fence to see you lying down sunbathing. However, the Nudity Act requires all prosecutions to be approved by the provincial attorney-general. He is highly unlikely to prosecute at Wreck Beach because Metro Vancouver (the regional district) has declared it to be "clothing-optional". But legally he still could, but he would not get a lasting conviction. For Vancouver's annual Pride Parade, he hasn't prosecuted those nude in the parade, and is unlikely to do so, because the people who would be offended don't like gays and so wouldn't watch the parade, anyway. For the World Naked Bike Ride, the nudes go by so fast, on-lookers hardly have time to be offended. Besides, their genitals are not easy to see when they are cycling. Also, they seem so harmless and exuberant. Also, there is legal ambiguity about whether you are nude if you have shoes on. But you are at a much higher risk of a criminal charge and conviction if you try it without many nudes along with you! Also, bringing a minor is risky. Added for 2009 February: Clothing generally is offencive; nudity creates solidarity by Korky Day Many people cry that nudity is offencive (British spelling). Does it occur to them that merely being clothed might be offencive? I am not referring to the case of clothing with something offencive on it, like a Nazi swastika or a Confederate flag. Neither do I mean that the clothing is ugly or dirty. I mean just the fact that someone is clothed when it's warm enough to be naked and some place where the "textile" (clothed person) isn't going to be busted, and they have no other good excuse. Yes, then their being clothed does offend me! I'll explain. Actually, I think everyone has a similar feeling of offence that I do, but it might be subconscious or the feeling might be obscured by other strong feelings. I think that it is just a natural, animal feeling that when someone unnecessarily hides all or part of themself from you, you feel that they don't trust you and/or don't like you. Like if someone wears sunglasses, especially when out of the sun. That can be disconcerting in the same way. When people are dressed all alike voluntarily, that can help them create a feeling of solidarity that they have something in common, like a volleyball team. Even more so if they are all naked, because they are saying, in addition to their bodies being equally nude, that they have nothing to hide from each other, that they trust each other, that they like (or at least accept) each other. However, people dressed differently are alienating themselves from each other. Someone in a prison guard uniform is saying that he or she is superior to someone in a prisoner's uniform. Someone in a suit and tie or in a fancy formal gown is saying usually that he or she is economically or socially superior to others, or trying to be. Even ordinary clothing sends messages of some sort or another. And it's generally alienating unless it's a shirt saying "I'd rather be nude!" People remain clothed at a nude beach for reasons I put in 3 categories: 1. Fear of being attacked, bothered, or ridiculed. (Mostly women and youth in this category.) 2. Desire to be in a superior position, like watching a commercial strip show while clothed, or like being more armed than an opponent or an underling. (Mostly men in this category.) 3. Fear of being embarrassed or ashamed. (All types of people.) Part of maturing as a person is, I think, admitting and overcoming such fears, if you've ever had them. I'm not a nude optionist. I'm a nudist. I think it's not just a frivolous option to be nude, but actually better for you and for society if you are. I encourage everyone to go nude (weather and laws permitting) not just "if they feel like it", but to grow as people so they know why they feel like it or not. Going nude in front of others is not just for fun, but to extend good feelings toward others, to try to overcome the usual alienation. It's up to all of us to create social scenes where everyone feels safe enough to go nude. Nevertheless, yes, you will see me at nude optional events and sites. I go to enjoy being nude, to reward others who are nude, and to encourage the textiles to free themselves of their fears. I don't mean that I harass textiles, but I often will befriend them so that I can, when the mood is right, encourage them toward freedom. It's up to all of us to try to make everyone confortable enough to be nude. That's why we don't comment on their attractiveness or make premature suggestive comments, etc. In the old days, many nudist resorts and clubs had thinly disguised beauty contests, often called king, queen, prince, and princess contests. The nudist movement has now mostly dispensed with them because such events imply that some people are less accepted and less valued. Even the textile world has fewer beauty contests out of similarly expanded consciousness, including feminism. When laws prevent you from being nude, I think showing more skin will cause a natural animal reaction in others of less alienation than being more fully dressed. Down with clothing! Added for 2008 December: Where to recruit nudists Our movement needs your help to grow. Invite people who you'd like to be nudists, including people you'd like to date. Tell them about this calendar: www.korky.ca www.korky.ca/nfirc.html . Below are some local, mostly non-nudist places to find prospects. E-mail your suggestions to add to this list! 1. Dances, such as a. Just Dance. www.justdance.ca b. Vancouver Country Dances. www.vcn.bc.ca/vcountry 2. At nude beaches, befriend people, those nude or not. There you can also find many who don't know yet about nudist events elsewhere. 3. In neighbourhoods around nude swims, pass out fliers to homes or on corners. 4. Sing-along parties. (c/o your editor.) 5. Nightclubs. (Want to suggest any particular ones?) 6. Critical Mass bike rides, as in Section 11, above. 7. Festivals, parades, marches, etc., as in Section 11, above. 8. Tourist hang-outs, hostels, hotels, etc. Talk to them, pass out fliers, and post fliers. 9. Progressive and radical demonstrations and other events. 10. Any other organisations, events, and places you like. 11. The annual Fool's Day Parade in Vancouver, on or near April 1, if it is revived. 12. Relatively tolerant places of worship, such as the Unitarian Church, the Pastafarians, etc. 13. Your e-mail contacts. —2008 November - 2010 October 3. Emotional bind over women's bindings What if you saw a woman sitting calmly and quietly on a park bench wearing handcuffs, leg chains, a blind fold, and a gag. How would you feel? I'd feel horrified, afraid, sympathetic, and sorry for her. I'd want to free her, or at least call the police. If I did anything to help her, though, I'd be afraid of retribution from whomever bound her. Well, that's just how I feel when I see a woman or girl wearing a hajib (Middle East headscarf). I feel the same when I see a woman wearing a prescribed veil or burqa. Those are not quite as binding as the hypothetical situation I described, and the female might think that she is wearing the hajib purely out of her own volition, but I still believe the pressures on her are horrific and intolerable, so that she basically is restricted like a slave. Now the same is true for all of us in the West who are forced to dress at all. We could be nude if we wouldn't be harassed. Nevertheless, the extreme of the hajib still tugs more at my heartstrings. At least I can imagine that a person in Western dress might be a nudist in their free time. It's hard to imagine that for the hajib-wearer. — © 2008 November 21 to 2013 December 30, Korky Day. Women's tough questions Men, nudism can help you with some answers in delicate situations. For instance, she might asks you, "Does this outfit make me look fat?" You can reply, "To value a person primarily for her looks or clothing is hurtful, oppressive, and sexist. Since I love you, I want you to be happy. So for whatever you want, I'll be supportive. If it would please you, I'd prefer you take the outfit off." Also, she might ask about another woman, "Do you think she is prettier than I?" You could explain, "Our patriarchal society tries to make you insecure so that you obey men, serve them, and help them get power. I want all women to be competent and confident. Let's make this a world where women wield at least half the political and financial power. Prettiness is an opinion, not a fact. I avoid thinking of people in competition for attractiveness." "If I die, will you let your next woman wear my old clothes?" "I wish we could live without clothes. But they are your clothes, so I shall do your will." — © 2008 November, Korky Day. Free too floss You can use hair for dental floss. I've used my own head hair. Take a few strands, maybe a dozen or so. Preferably they're long enough that you can leave them rooted. — © 2008 November, Korky Day. P.S. We had a complaint in 2013 that this Web publication about nudism was spoiled by the inclusion of this tiny non-nudist article. If enough of you agree, I will remove it. Added for 2008 October: Are your pants too tight? In the colder climates, we nudists often have to wear clothes for warmth. Many of you foolishly believe that if you can still breathe, your trousers and underpants are loose enough. How do you think your muscles are going to flex and stay fit if your clothing is always doing their work for them? Tight pants are the new corsets and girdles of our age, causing muscle flabbiness and many other diseases and accidents. When you undress, look at your skin. Do you see line dents where the elastic bands were? Do you see marks in other places that garments were constricting you? If you are white- or brown-skinned, those dents are usually redish. Those should be your warning signals. They are not healthy. Give that clothing to someone thinner! Clothes should be loose enough that you can lift them up without stretching and slide them around all over your skin. Ask me to show you when you see me clothed. Go without underpants, especially "briefs". Even in the rare cases when they are not too tight, they restrict air flow and breed yeast and other infections. People like to laugh at famous entertainers who recently got publicity for being seen in public without underpants, but actually the celebrities have the right idea. If someone gets a glimpse up a skirt, well, at least no one is injured! — © 2008 September - 2010 July 3, Korky Day. Adages, answers, aphorisms, figures of speech, idioms, mottoes, oaths, pearls of wisdom, proverbs, quotations, quotes, sayings, signs, slogans, toasts, zingers, etc. This section and some others which were here have been removed. For information about them, please contact the editor: korkyday [insert a with a circle round it] yahoo [dot] com . Afraid of being pigeon-holed? I'm getting a little tired of people who practice social nudity but claim not to be nudists or naturists. They're like women who are all in favour of equal rights but claim not to be feminists. People who consider themselves nude optionists (or, to put it backwards, clothing optionists or optionalists) are also nudists if they practice social or public nudity voluntarily. Those who wear clothes at nude sites and events are known scientifically as gawkers, party-poopers, and pervs. — © 2008 June - 2010 July 3, Korky Day. Exceptions to nudity in nudism We nudists are reasonable! Even strict nudist rules are sometimes bent. That lenience is part of the old nudist tradition, which continues today. Examples of exceptions: warm clothes when the place is cold; nappies for babies and other incontinent people; shorts for menstruating women (though many nudist women choose other options); clothes when welcoming people at the entrance to a nudist site; aprons for fry cooks; sun hats; footwear; or, rarely, for unnaturally fearful children. Also: clothes to counter-act or prevent sunburn, illness, injury, etc. Since your face and shoulders usually are most at risk of sunburn, you needn't cover your entire body just to shade those parts. However, sunscreen lotion is very popular among nudists. If you are pained by playing volleyball without a brassiere, you might be allowed to wear a top to play the game, even at a "nude-only" venue. We're not sadists, after all! Just ask an event organiser if you want an exception in order to wear something. They will be kind and polite, even if they disallow the exemption. Some event organisers might be more reasonable than others, so please forgive human fallibility. For instance, the event organizers would be well advised to ensure that the room is warm enough for themselves to go nude. Organisers of nude-only events are unlikely to accept as reasons for adults to cover themselves: religious objections, newness to the nude freedom movement, shyness, fear of being seen naked, fear of others taking offence, fear of mistreatment because of being nude, fear of arousal, etc. That last situation has good solutions, for which just ask the nudist veterans and officials, especially the men. If any of those bother you, please discuss it with the organizers. At nude-optional events, on the other hand, you may wear clothes without having to justify them. However, I hope you can instead join us in the liberation of nudity as much as possible. Please see also the article "Are you proud of tolerating nudes while you are not nude?", above, in Section 5.4.5. — © 2009 March 18 to 2013 December 30, Korky Day. Writing needed This article moved to "Section 19. Possible Upcoming Articles, Ideas for . . . ", below. Proposals to promote nudism, nude-optionism, topfreedom, etc. by Korky Day (continually revised, like most of this Web publication) Without enough effort by us, society could sink further back into genital shame and fear. The social nudity movement needs your help. Please report your efforts to NFIR Calendar. A. Procedures. 1. Stop scheduling events to conflict with nude-friendly events. Pressure the groups which do that. 2. Continue to encourage your group's members to attend events of other nude-friendly groups. 3. Discount admission for indigenes, students, disabled people, low income, and members of La Leche League and NOCIRC. (NIFTY already discounts for those first 4 categories.) 4. One admission card for all 4 clubs sponsoring swims. (Idea of Paul of Skinnydippers.) 5. More quickly admit attenders to events. For instance, at the swims, collect people's money well before the change rooms are open to us. 6. Rewards for bringing newcomers. (See B.7.) 7. NIFTY brings in quite a lot of donations by asking for a yearly donation to be a member, possibly more income than if we charged a set price of 3$. People can then feel good about how generous they were. That's better than just thinking that since they had to pay, they did—or better than just calculating whether they'd save more money by getting a membership and a lower rate of admission. (So they are in a generous mood instead of a scrimping mood.) Also, people who cannot so easily afford 3$ will be more likely to attend and give less—instead of staying away and paying nothing. 8. Discount for first-timers and/or young adults. B. Publicity in public. 1. More tabling for nude groups at non-nude events. 2. Fliers to neighbourhoods around pools. 3. Pass out more fliers on street corners, etc. 4. Discreet posters at each pool all the time. 5. Posters at hostels. 6. Badges and message clothing, such as "Nudist in disguise", "I'd rather be nude", "Nude-peace", "Nude-friendly". 7. To recruiters, maybe pay a commission for each newcomer who attends a swim. Maybe 10$. That reward could be from the host group or from a separate fund. Anyone could start such a fund. (See A.6.) C. Publicity in the media. 1. More free announcements in newspapers, radio, telly, etc. 2. More free announcements on the Internet, especially Eventful and Craigslist. 3. Each group encourages its members to subscribe to NFIR Calendar. Ask every attender to their events to tell you their e-address. If they write it themselves, it will very likely be illegible.) 4. Each group posts a link to NFIR Calendar in its Web publication. (FVNC has done something similar.) 5. Innovative news creation. a. Publicity stunts. b. Demonstrations. c. Public speeches, debates, and discussions. d. Lawsuits. e. More news releases because they generate free publicity, mostly favourable. 6. Buy newspaper ads. 7. Notices in the government recreation brochures. 8. Call in to radio and television talk shows. 9. Write in to Internet discussions. 10. Organise with Web services, possibly Pledgebank, Facebook, Meetup, Eventful, MySpace, FlashMob, DemoChoice, etc. (See others in Section 13, above.) D. Practice. 1. Encourage and support writers who are on our side, such as Carellin Brooks (author of the 2007 book Wreck Beach), even if their writing isn't perfect. See story above, in Section 15, News. 2. Expose more skin in public. When required to wear a swimsuit, boldly wear a skimpy one, though not with a teasing attitude. 3. Streak. (Warning: you could get a criminal record.) 4. Legally, females now can be topfree anywhere males can be (in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, etc.). If you don't exercise that right, you might lose it. That includes all public pool sessions. Also parks and sidewalks. 5. Everywhere, not just at nudist places, refrain from scorning how people dress or don't dress, unless they were pressured into covering up. Seldom mention a person's appearance. Comment constructively or not at all. Even to say how good someone looks might suggest that a person's worth depends largely on their looks, which are largely the luck of their genetics. Instead, encourage an atmosphere of acceptance so that people don't worry so much about what they can't change. When you encourage nutrition, health, and fitness, do so to help make everyone happier in all ways, not just looking good. 6. Go nude at home, especially when others are there, such as guests. Do it indoors and out. (To avoid criminal charges, be careful that you are not visible to people who are off your property.) Go nude at others' homes if they don't object. 7. Skinnydip in groups at isolated places. 8. Don't consume alcohol, cannabis, nicotine, or other psycho-active drugs (drope) while nude or before disrobing. Be naturally high instead. If you are unsatisfied to be nude while totally sober, then perhaps you need to re-examine your entire life and attitudes. You might be harming the cause of nudity. Caffeine and sweets are drope, too. Cut them out, along with sick food, such as white flour, white rice, fried food, artificial sweeteners, etc. 9. Social nudity and breastfeeding should help you with your sex hang-ups and eating disorders. Improve yourself. 10. Don't sexually mutilate yourself or your male or female children ("circumcision"). Fully breastfeed them. E. Initiatives. 1. Show nude-friendly films (non-porn), maybe before or after swims. (NIFTY has shown movies after swims, but without much nudity.) 2. Annual meeting with 1 or 2 representatives of each group. Discuss common problems and how to advance the whole movement. 3. Expand the nude-friendly zone at Ulksen eastward from Acadia Beach (part of greater Wreck Beach) to West Spanish Banks Beach. Nude song list This article has been removed. Such events are related to the cause, such as restaurant socials, fund-raisers, and government meetings. Some events are not listed herein if they are announced only to a group's members, such as at private resorts. For many of those resorts, please see Section 8 above.
